I Want!

We are looking at 1 Timothy 6:6-16 this morning.

I’m quoting the entire passage below because it is all important. If you want to click the link above and bookmark this passage that would be great!

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.”

In December I was doing my Christmas shopping when I passed a toy store. At the window was a boy with his nose pressed to the glass. “Oh, I want the blue Power Ranger sooooo much,” he said. Later on I as shocked when I saw two teens my age begging their mom for a certain article of clothing. “Please, Please, I have to have it. I’ll just die without it. Everyone else has one…Please, Please…”

I wondered if these two girls knew that God has already given us all that we need and more. I Timothy 6:6-8, “But Godliness with contentment is great gain…But if we have food and clothing, we should be content with that…” Why do we constantly feel that God has deprived us of something? The Son of God had all the riches in the heavens and earth and ruled over them all, yet He came to earth to live a poor life. But He never complained about all the things that He didn’t have. He gladly bore the burden of sin and died on the cross for us so we might have all the riches of heaven. The next time you feel you absolutely “need” something that you want more than anything in the world; think of what Jesus died without: glory, fame, His reputation, and what He died with: OUR sin. Be content with what you have, and be glad that Jesus did away with the sin that was ours.

Points To Ponder: In the past month, name all the things that you “had” to have. Then think about why you needed them. Do you need them now?

Prayer Possibilities: Pray for those who are less fortunate than you. Thank God for all the blessings that He has graciously given you.
