Our Peace With God

Read Romans 5:1-11 as we begin today. I’ve quoted verses 1-5 below.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.”

Frank and Jack had just gotten into a “big” argument. It was one of those arguments that we all have gotten into with someone, but that are so pointless they are virtually unnecessary. This little squabble was about worldly possessions. Jack teased Frank about how cheap his car was, but Frank turned around and teased Jack about his family and how his parents acted and dressed. They were best friends and there is no way this type of argument should have ever gotten in the middle of their friendship. It did, but not for long. A week later, they say how much their friendship meant to them and how dumb there little disagreement had been. They talked to each other and finally made peace.

That was a nice little story, wasn’t it? Well, when we make peace with someone, it is almost always necessary for two people to be in an argument and work to make peace. But this is not the case between us and God. We played absolutely no part in our receiving peace from God. Our peace came when God’s Son, Jesus Christ, died and rose for our sins. Because of this act, Christ is called the Prince of Peace. In Ephesians 2:14 we are told, “He himself if our peace…,” which means “spiritual” peace. We have eternal life in heaven through his peace which came only by God because He loves us. Christ is our peace and we did nothing to receive it but God gave it to us because of His great love for us.

Points To Ponder: How do we have peace with God? Explain how we fit into the picture of our peace with God.

Prayer Possibilities: Thank God that we have peace with Him. Pray that He will bring others to faith so they may also have peace with Him.
